A Drop of Wisdom

Our Book Club

It is a place where we can share opinions about our favourite books so we can expand each other's horizons.

I will start with one of my favourite 'easy' writers Monica McInerney. I saw her book for the first time in Aldi, of all places, bought it and loved it. It is light hearted, simple, dynamic and funny. I bought it as an audio book: surely, this novel was a good travel companion, and I've listened to it twice already... It is set in Australia, which is also a bonus as I don't know many easy and light-hearted novels about Australia.

My all times favourite is Jodi Picoult. The first book of hers I've read was My Sister's Keeper, which is also the most famous one, but I would recommend any of her books without the slightest hesitation as I've never read a mediocre book by her. Change of Heart, House Rules, Picture Perfect, Perfect Match, Lone Wolf - these are just a few of my last year reads. All of them are about making choices, all of them have ordinary characters who live in the most extraordinary circumstances... I find her books captivating and very educational, as all her topics are well researched, and she never repeats herself. Picoult's ability to learn and to be trustworthy in her books is simply phenomenal. Her ability to find conflicts which are impossible to resolve is also one of a kind. All her novels are thought provoking.

A few years ago I watched a series of African stories "The №1 Ladies' Detective Agency" on SBS which I found to be hilarious and I wanted to know more about it; it is how I discovered Alexander McCall Smith, one of my favourite modern writers. I would highly recommend all books from his African series as his knowledge and understanding of Botswana culture rings true in every word. It feels as if it was written by a native African and with a good portion of love, compassion and humour. However, the writer himself is a Scotsman and his books, which are set in Europe, are just as entertaining, clever and funny. He is a good writer of characters and situations, he is very intelligent and well educated. All his books were a pleasure to read and to listen to...
